What is feminism?
Feminism: The belief in and advocacy for equality based on gender. This definition is very succinct, but we all know that incorporating feminism in our lives is trickier than that. We must embark on a lifelong journey to educate ourselves on women of all different backgrounds and to advocate for gender equality. Part of this education process is immersing oneself in the lives and feelings of women. Through reading, we are able to intimately explore the struggles and triumphs of all different kinds of women. This is one of the many ways to find feminism. Feminist literature: Works of writing that bring women’s stories to the forefront of the narrative in an accurate portrayal and in which equality and female perseverance are central themes. Our program promotes engaging with feminist literature across different genres.
Formulate your own definitions of feminism and feminist literature that you hold before your reading experience. Make sure you document it! As you move through your reading and discussions, try documenting how these definitions have developed.
